Essaouira’s clocktower

(Magana)

GPS coordinates: 31°30’43.7″N 9°46’14.8″W (31.512149, -9.770768)

The idea to build a clocktower next to the gate Bab Manjana belongs to Hubert Lyautey (chief of French administration). Construction of tower was started in 1912 and since 1918 carillon with 5 bells reminded citizens of every 15 min. that had passed. Until in 1997 the clock broke down. It was repaired in 2012, but today the carillon measures every 30 min.
